North Texas Care Costs & Payment Options

NORTH TEXAS FAMILY PLANNING

Care costs and ways to pay

Start with real numbers. Then compare the care needed, the full monthly bill and the money available to pay it. We help families put those pieces in order across Dallas-Fort Worth and the surrounding North Texas communities.

Reviewed October 24, 2026. Survey figures below are from 2025, the latest CareScout survey available at review. Actual community prices must be confirmed directly.

What does care cost around Dallas-Fort Worth?

A median is the middle survey price, not a minimum or maximum. These metro figures are a starting point for North Texas planning; they are not a separate price estimate for every county. See CareScout’s survey and select Dallas.

Adult day health care can be another option to explore. CareScout reports a Texas statewide median of $1,950 per month; its tool does not provide a separate Dallas-area figure for this service.

Costs can vary across the Metroplex

Prices depend on the type of care, the room, and the help a person needs. A low starting price may leave out care or other fees. Ask for a written quote that shows the full bill.

Use the survey figures above to start planning. Actual bills may be higher or lower. Check what is included before you choose.

What might help at home add up to?

At the local $33 hourly survey rate, 20 hours each week works out to about $2,860 a month; 40 hours works out to about $5,720. These calculations use 52 weeks divided by 12 months. Agency minimums, overtime and extra services can change a quote.

Ways families pay for care

Income and savings

List Social Security, pensions and other dependable monthly income. Subtract the full care bill and the expenses that will continue. The remaining gap shows how much savings or other funding is needed each month.

Existing long-term care insurance

Ask the insurer about covered settings, benefit triggers, waiting periods and daily or monthly limits. Get claim instructions before assuming a policy will pay. Review the insurance basics.

Veterans benefits

VA Aid and Attendance can add to a qualifying veteran’s or survivor’s pension. Ask a VA-accredited representative to review eligibility and help with the application. Check VA requirements.

Texas Medicaid and STAR+PLUS

Eligible people may receive long-term services through Medicaid. STAR+PLUS HCBS can include assisted living services; residents still pay room and board. Ask Texas HHS or the health plan about financial and care eligibility, participating providers and current access. Explore STAR+PLUS · Assisted living eligibility and room-and-board rules.

The home and other assets

A home sale or rental may help fund care. Compare net proceeds, carrying costs and timing. If borrowing is being considered, ask a licensed lender for the full cost and repayment terms. Review tax and benefits effects before making an asset decision.

Know what Medicare covers

Medicare generally does not pay for ongoing custodial long-term care. Eligible short-term skilled nursing or home-health services follow separate coverage rules. Read Medicare’s coverage explanation.

Build a budget for the transition, too

Set aside a separate line for moving and sorting belongings. Include cleanouts and storage, along with home preparation. Add any period when you will be paying for both the home and the new living arrangement. Get written quotes for those tasks instead of mixing one-time costs into the monthly care rate.
